General guidance
The rail network has a number of privately owned facilities, accessible by rail, including light maintenance depots. Most, but not all, of these depots are owned by Network Rail. The operator of the depot is known as the depot facility owner and anyone seeking access to a light maintenance depot that they do not operate, needs to enter into an access contract with the relevant depot facility owner. Such contracts must be approved by us.
We have created this diagram to explain the obligations imposed under depot leases and depot access contracts.
Please visit our statutory duties and functions to find out the law through which we regulate depot access.
To help you, we have published a set of template depot access contracts.
