Trespass

In 2007, 270 deaths resulted from trespass and suicide on the railways, of which over three quarters were confirmed or suspected suicides. 2007 saw no children killed while crossing or playing on the tracks, for the first year on record.

The downturn in trespass deaths seen in 2007 mirrors the steady downward trend seen in previous years. All these deaths have tragic consequences for the families of those affected. They also have a traumatic impact on railway staff, particularly drivers, some of whom leave the industry as a direct consequence of their experience. The detailed figures shown below are available in an A4 PDF version of the table in related links.
