Industry companies and organisations

There are a number of key companies and organisations in the rail industry.

Network Rail

Network Rail is the owner and operator of the rail infrastructure, which includes track, signals, points and some stations.  This section explains its role, how the company is structured and its responsibilities. We regulate Network Rail's stewardship of the infrastructure.

Train operating companies

Train operating companies (TOCs) provide passenger train services. Most of these companies have a franchise awarded by the Department for Transport  in order to operate a service which sets out what they are required to deliver and the government funds available.

Freight operating companies

Freight operating companies (FOCs) provide services for the transport of goods.

Rolling stock companies

Rolling stock companies are commonly referred to as ROSCOs, and they own and lease the rolling stock (carriages) to train operating and freight companies.
