Health and safety statistics

We compile our health and safety statistics. The statistical data is derived from the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR), including information on key findings and trends.

Information comes from a variety of sources including RSSB, Network Rail, train and freight operating companies, Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and London Underground.

The information is published in our annual Railway Safety Statistical Report and differs from our main annual report in that it covers a calendar year rather than a financial year. The reason for this is that we now provide incident data to European government bodies and their requirement is for data to relate to calendar years.

Our Railway Safety Statistical Report

The health and safety information found in the Railway Safety Statistical Report covers the mainline railway, metros, London and Glasgow undergrounds, light rail and heritage railways in Great Britain and contains railway safety data on:

  • level crossings
  • trespass and vandalism
  • rolling stock and infrastructure
  • railway employee health and safety
  • collisions, derailments and all other incidents

Health and safety data

Health and safety reports are available here. HMRI moved from HSE to ORR in April 2006. Reports prior to 2005 were therefore HSE branded.
