Get your career back on track with inspection opportunities at the ORR

ORR/04/08

If you feel that your career might be heading off the rails, then you might like to get back on track with the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR).

ORR is seeking to appoint railway inspectors for nationwide positions either in the front line or operational policy teams. This follows a successful recruitment campaign last year.

ORR is looking for people from a regulatory, inspection, railway engineering or railway operations background.  Comprehensive training in railway inspection will be provided, so candidates' experience is far more important than the sector they are from.

However, whatever your background, it is vital that you’ll be able to make tough decisions, have an understanding of risk management and strong negotiating and influencing skills, in order that ORR achieves continuous improvements in health and safety.

Karen Barnes, an inspector on the London Metro team joined ORR through last year’s recruitment campaign. She has a background in HGV maintenance and said: “I wanted to join as I thought that it would be a fantastic opportunity to work for a professional organization like ORR. I was also attracted to the training opportunities available, and knowing that I will play a part in making the railways safer. The training up to now has been extremely rewarding, and colleagues have been supportive.

“I undertake proactive inspections in accordance with our intervention plans in the London Metro Team. I predominantly look after the Jubilee Line and tailor inspections to suit that environment, looking at areas such as stations, railway infrastructure and depots. I also undertake reactive work such as investigating any significant incidents or accidents involving the public or employees.

“To be an inspector you need good listening and communication skills, react quickly to a situation, be able to make decisions in a timely manner and analyse information. I am really enjoying my time at ORR, and would encourage anyone with the relevant experience to make an application.”

Linda Williams, Her Majesty’s chief inspector of railways said: “A career in health and safety inspection is an excellent opportunity to put your railway industry knowledge to good use. Working as an inspector is varied, challenging and very rewarding. You will be playing an important role in ensuring the railways are a safe place for everyone.”
