ORR/03/07

The Office of Rail Regulation has launched a recruitment campaign for its Railway Inspectorate. Six positions including area team inspectors and signalling and telecommunications specialist inspectors are being advertised.

The area team inspector positions are based in London, Basingstoke or East Grinstead and cover light rail operators in the London area and the national network in the south east.

These area team roles are suitable for those with a rail engineering, operations or regulatory inspection background, with ORR providing full training to ensure you are able to undertake the very highest standard of inspections.

The specialist signalling and telecoms inspector roles are based in Newcastle, Leeds or London.

The applicants for these roles will have worked extensively in either signalling or telecoms within the rail industry, and have considerable experience of design, installation, testing or commissioning. Full regulatory training will be provided to support your technical knowledge.

Tom Wake, an inspector for 16 years, when asked about his job said: “The job is all about using your own judgement. You are not desk-bound and have a lot of freedom to organise your own work programme, with support from your colleagues. Along with technical expertise you must have the ability to get on with, listen and understand people.”

Linda Williams, the Chief Inspector of Railways, said: “A career in health and safety inspection is an excellent opportunity to put your railway industry knowledge to good use. Working as an inspector is varied, challenging and very rewarding. You will be playing an important role in ensuring the railways are a safe place for everyone.”
