21 July 1998 A seminar to review the Code of Practice: meeting the needs of disabled passengers Thursday 30 July 1998, Copthorne Tara Hotel, Scarsdale Place, London W8 5SR You are invited to attend a one-day seminar to launch the review the Rail Regulator's Code of Practice for meeting the needs of disabled passengers. This will be an occasion for disability organisations, rail operators and those concerned with rail transport to consider the Code of Practice, published in 1994, in the light of recent developments in improving access to rail services and the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, and to set the agenda for further accessibility improvements into the millennium. The seminar will take place at the Copthorne Tara Hotel, Scarsdale Place, London W8 5SR on Thursday 30 July, starting at 10.15 am. The opening address will be given by Glenda Jackson MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, with John Swift QC, the Rail Regulator, in the chair. Other key note speakers include John O'Brien, Franchising Director, Office of Passenger Rail Franchising; Sir Robert Horton, Chairman, Railtrack; Ivor Warburton, Chairman, Association of Train Operating Companies; Bert Massie, Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation and Peter Barker of the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Attending the seminar will be representatives of national disability organisations, the rail industry, rail users' consultative committees and local and central government. Working sessions will provide an opportunity to consider in depth the needs of disabled passengers in relation to provision of information before and during a journey, access through stations, service standards on trains and rail staff training. The new Code of Practice, which is planned for publication later this year, will take into account the output from this seminar which has been organised for the Office of the Rail Regulator by Cranfield Centre for Logistics and Transportation, Cranfield University.
