ORR publishes national rail trends yearbook 2009/10

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published its national rail trends yearbook for 2009/10.
The yearbook highlights a wide range of the latest rail statistics on areas including punctuality, rail usage and complaints. Key developments over the past year include:
- punctuality by franchised train operators was 91.5%, up from 90.6% in 2008-09;
- complaints fell in 2009-10 by 16.5% from 55 to 46 per 100,000 passenger journeys;
- the average rail fare increased by 0.7% compared with a 7.6% increase for 2008-09;
- 1.26 billion passengers journeys were made in 2009-10, a decrease of 1.3%;
- passenger revenue in 2009-10 was £6.2 billion, a 2.9% increase; and
- the amount of freight lifted was 87.2 million tonnes, a 15.1% decrease on 2008-09.
Commenting on the information, ORR chief executive Bill Emery said:
"The latest national rail trends yearbook makes positive reading for passengers as punctuality continues to improve. With complaints also down, the rail industry is to be congratulated on these signals of progress."
